You think your Leica's expensive? This one cost $2.8 million (video)

Image

If you've ever baulked at the price of Leica's rebadged Panasonic cameras, then spare a thought (or some change) for the anonymous buyer of this 1923 0-Series snapper. Vienna's WestLicht Photographica auctions flogged the prototype for €2.16 million ($2.77 million) and is now the most expensive camera ever sold -- beating this $1.9 million 0-Series from last year. If you'd like to see the surprisingly relaxed way the auctioneer handles the recession-baiting sale, head on past the break for the footage.

[Thanks, Rakesh]

The Cheapest Ways to Save the World [Economics]

Ask a bunch of the world's best economists—including four Nobel laureates—how to make the world a better place, and they don't just blurt out an answer. They take their time, weigh up impact-per-dollar and make careful decisions. And this is what they came up with. More »

Rangers' Josh Hamilton joins select club with 4-homer game vs. Orioles (+video)

The Texas Rangers outfielder drove in eight runs with four swings of the bat Tuesday night.

Not even Babe Ruth was able to do what Josh Hamilton of the Rangers did Tuesday night against the Orioles in Baltimore - hit four home runs in a single game - as Texas beat the O's, 10-3.

Hamilton hit three of the blasts to center field and one to left off three different Oriole pitchers at Camden Yards. All the home runs were two-run shots. He ended up going five-for-five at the plate, adding a fifth-inning double.

The Rangers center fielder enjoyed how his teammates reacted as much as hitting the home runs, ESPN.com reported.

"I was saying after I hit two that I had never hit three in a game before. What a blessing that was," Hamilton said. "And then to hit four, it was just an awesome feeling to see how excited my teammates got.

"It reminds you of when you're in Little League and a little kid, and just the excitement and why we play the game. Things like that. You never know what can happen. It was just an absolute blessing."

The 'Big League Stew' Yahoo! Sports blog points out that Hamilton is the 16th major leaguer to accomplish the feat. Hamilton joins such greats as Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays, and Mike Schmidt in the select four-homer game club.

Afterwards, Hamilton, a early AL M.V.P. candidate, put his career night in perspective, according to MLB.com.

"Obviously, other than the World Series, it's the highlight of my big league career," Hamilton said.

Hamilton leads the major leagues in hitting with a .406 average, 14 home runs and 36 RBIs. The Rangers currently lead the American League West Division with a 20-10 record.

Acer Liquid Glow hits the FCC, keeps its secrets

Image

Acer's Liquid series phones only occasionally reach the FCC, so it's with some surprise that we've just spotted the still-fresh Liquid Glow getting the US agency's approval under its E330 model name. Details are scarce as to whether or not there's been any changes made to the Android 4.0 phone on its way out of Taiwan, however: there's no telltale signs like cellular frequencies or carrier badging. If anything, Acer is hoping to keep information hush-hush by stamping a 180-day confidentiality seal on the manual and photos. It's entirely possible that this is the international GSM model with no 3G support for North American carriers, so we wouldn't get worked up about local release plans. Even so, knowing Canadian carrier Rogers' tendency to offer Acer phones, there's still a possibility that a version of the Liquid Glow might go on sale this side of the Pacific.

Help! There?s A Patent On My Idea! What Now?

U.S-patent-and-trademark-officeOne of the most frequent questions I get asked goes something like this: ?I have a really great idea, but (name of big company or university) has a patent on that. What do I do?? With over 8,000,000 patents issued to date and thousands of new patents issued weekly, chances are good that patents have been issued that are relevant to your business or idea. Knowingly infringing an active patent can lead to disastrous consequences for your business. So what do you do?

What Is This Trippy Burst of Light? [Video]

This is not a screensaver. Nor is it what happens if something goes wrong at the LHC, or the result of too much LSD. In fact, it's what happens if you have an over-active imagination and go out light paining with a remote control helicopter. More »

Next international edition of ?The Ultimate Fighter? will pit the United Kingdom against Australia

After success in Brazil with an international spinoff of "The Ultimate Fighter," the UFC will head Down Under, with fighting prospects from the United Kingdom taking on UFC hopefuls from Australia. The new show, called "Smashes," will cast in London on June 12 and Sydney June 15.

According to UFC officials, it's playing off the natural rivalry between Aussies and Brits. To the press release:

"Australia and the UK have a fierce, long-standing rivalry, and where better to settle the score than in the UFC's Octagon," said Marshall Zelaznik, UFC's Managing Director of International Development. "The popularity of MMA has exploded in Australia and the UK, with gyms opening all over the respective countries. There is an athlete in one of those gyms who hasn't had the chance to show the world what he can do ? The Ultimate Fighter is going give to him that opportunity. We're going to discover the UFC's future stars, you can bet on it."

TUF, American style has already produced plenty of British and Australian UFC veterans. Michael Bisping won season three and then went on to coach a host of Brits on season nine. Ausses George Sotiropoulos and Kyle Noke also made their name on TUF.

There is no word on coaches yet, but American fans can look forward to plenty of subtitles on English-speakers. Most of Team UK from season nine had that honor. By sheer history alone, my money is on Australia. Remember, they are descended from the British convicts of yore.
