Japan manufacturers brace for euro zone breakup: Reuters poll (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Japanese manufacturers are bracing for a possible breakup of the euro zone, according to a Reuters poll released on Monday, with 65 percent saying they see a need to prepare for the currency block's partial or complete collapse.

Europe's two-year old sovereign debt crisis, which has left Greece teetering on the edge of default, has taken a heavy toll on Japanese corporate sentiment as exporters struggle with a strong yen and slower growth in China.

When manufacturers were asked if they are considering changing business plans in Europe, 31 percent of those responding said they are in the process of doing so or have already made changes. Of those firms, 90 percent said they could scale back operations or have already done so.

Many manufacturers were also looking to shrink operations in China and North America in favor of expanding in other Asian countries to tap demand for their goods, the survey showed.

Euro zone finance ministers will decide on Monday what terms of a Greek debt restructuring they are ready to accept as part of a second bailout package for Athens after negotiators for private creditors said they could not improve their offer.

Resolving the issue of a Greek debt swap is key to putting Athens' debt on a sustainable path and avoiding a chaotic default that could threaten the whole currency bloc.

The poll, taken January 5-17, surveyed 400 big firms, of which 247 responded. The questions were part of the Reuters tankan for January, which was published on Friday.

The tankan, which is closely correlated with the Bank of Japan's quarterly tankan survey of business sentiment, showed manufacturers remained pessimistic about business conditions for the second straight month in January.

Manufacturers showed concern about China's growth prospects, with 50 percent saying they could change their business strategy as China's red-hot growth cools. Of those firms, 65 percent say they could shrink operations.

China's economy is expanding at its weakest pace in 2-1/2 years, with sequentially softer annual growth in the last four quarters seen spilling over into the first three months of 2012, leading many analysts to expect the worst full-year growth in a decade.

The poll suggested half of Japanese manufacturers are taking another look at Asian markets excluding China, and 52 percent of those firm want to expand in an attempt to reduce dependence on the Chinese market.

Only 24 percent of manufacturers were considering changing their North American strategy, but 61 percent of those firms said they are likely to scale back.

Manufacturers were pessimistic on the Japanese market. One in three are reconsidering domestic business plans. Of those, 78 percent said they are likely to shrink operations.

Non-manufacturers, which include construction firms and retailers, were more positive on the domestic economy as they are likely to benefit from reconstruction following last year's record earthquake and the worst nuclear crisis in 25 years.

The survey showed that 75 percent of non-manufacturers are looking to change their domestic strategy, with 60 percent of those firms leaning toward expansion.

When manufacturers and non-manufacturers are combined, almost 70 percent say the global economy is the biggest risk to their outlook, followed by 57 percent who said they are worried about the rising yen.

Thunderbolt gains support from Acer, Asus, Lenovo, but can it topple USB 3.0? (Digital Trends)

intel-thunderbolt-port-macbook

The battle over which data cable standard will dominate in the years ahead is beginning to heat up. With USB 3.0 beginning to take off, the fate of Intel?s high-speed Thunderbolt port has been under scrutiny as of late. Everything runs on USB and though Apple has been a huge proponent of the new Thunderbolt port, including it as one of the only ports on its entire line of MacBook computers, support from the world?s most popular tech manufacturer doesn?t necessarily guarantee success. Some years back, Apple famously backed a USB 2.0 competitor called FireWire, but was forced to eventually give in after the entire PC world embraced USB 2.0.

This time, Apple may not have to go it alone.?Acer, Asus, and Lenovo will offer Ultrabook laptops with Thunderbolt ports, reports DigiTimes. The Ultrabooks will coincide with the launch of Intel?s new Ivy Bridge processor platform in the second quarter (March ? June) of 2012. Ivy Bridge, a codename for Intel?s upcoming processors, will support Thunderbolt and USB 3.0. Sadly, in the same report, DigiTimes says that due to cost, Thunderbolt ports will likely only sneak into high-end laptops in 2012.?Hopefully more PC makers will jump onboard as time goes on.

If you?ve plugged a charger into your phone or a mouse into your computer in the last few years, you already know what USB (Universal Serial Bus) is. Any device that gets power through USB is using USB 2.0 or higher, which was released in 2000.?

intel-thunderbolt-diagram

Thunderbolt vs USB 3.0

The benefits of Intel?s Thunderbolt ports over USB 3.0 are clear. Thunderbolt offers speeds of up to 10 Gigabits per second (or 1.2 Gigabytes per second) while USB 3.0 only offers speeds up to 5Gbps or 640 Megabytes per second, slower than the other highest data cable standard on the market, SATA3, which tops out at 6Gbps. Thunderbolt is actually faster than a lot of computer?s internal drives. What does this mean? Well, if you wanted to download a 25GB movie on USB 3.0 it might take a minute to a minute and a half, but on Thunderbolt, it would take about 30 seconds. Both are fast, but there is a difference.

Thunderbolt?s list of benefits don?t end there. While USB 3.0 can deliver 4.5 watts of power to devices, Thunderbolt can deliver 10 watts. Then there?s the coolest thing: Thunderbolt can be used as an HDMI replacement as well. It can deliver HD video and eight channels of HD audio as well, which is why Apple uses it for its new ?Thunderbolt Display? external monitors.?

USB 3.0?s biggest defense against Thunderbolt is its legacy. It is quite fast, but is also backward compatible with all previous USB standards and devices, meaning there are tens of thousands of USB peripherals, hard drives, and whatnot that can still be used with a USB 3.0 port. Unless everyone decides to throw away their mouse today, USB 3.0 has a huge incumbent advantage. In a best case scenario, it would take Thunderbolt years to overthrow USB, and likely longer because USB 3.0 is pretty damn fast itself.?

Thunderbolt has another weakness as well: Intel owns it. Currently, Thunderbolt is only compatible with Intel chipsets. For it to come to the majority of smartphones and tablets, it would need to be adapted to run on ARM processors, as virtually no phones run on Intel processors. We don?t see Intel doing that anytime soon, which is sad. Currently, it would be expensive, and perhaps impossible, to try to implement a Thunderbolt-like port on a phone, according to AnandTech, so don?t expect it soon.?

Let?s just use both

Thunderbolt is a fantastic new standard with some clear benefits, but USB 3.0 has a history that we can?t ignore and is itself a marked improvement from USB 2.0. Why can?t most devices support both? This sign of support for Thunderbolt among top PC makers is encouraging, but there is no way it will come at the expense of USB 3.0 ports. All of these Ultrabooks will come with both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt, which is fantastic.

The only piece of the puzzle missing is Apple. It would be equally grand if Apple would support USB 3.0. It would open up Mac users to many new peripherals and possibilities, just as Thunderbolt does. There?s nothing wrong with both standards living side by side for a time. If Thunderbolt takes off, then great. If not, then hopefully USB 4.0 will match its specs. Can?t we all just play nice?

Primary day at hand, SC voters have their say (AP)

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Primary day at hand, fast-climbing Newt Gingrich told South Carolinians on Saturday that he was "the only practical conservative vote" able to stop front-runner Mitt Romney in the GOP presidential race. Romney said the first-in-the-South contest "could be real close" as he prepared for an extended fight by consenting to candidate debates in next-voting Florida.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum braced for a setback and looked ahead to the Jan. 31 contest after getting the most votes in Iowa and besting Gingrich in New Hampshire. Texas Rep. Ron Paul made plans to focus on states where his libertarian, Internet-driven message might find more of a reception with voters; his campaign said it had purchased a substantial ad buy in Nevada and Minnesota, which hold caucuses next month.

The first contest without Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who dropped out this past week and endorsed Gingrich, was seen as Romney's to lose just days ago. Instead, the gap closed quickly between the Massachusetts governor who portrays himself as the Republicans best positioned to defeat President Barack Obama and Gingrich, the confrontational former House speaker from Georgia.

Romney avoided a run-in with Gingrich at Tommy's Country Ham House, where both had scheduled campaign events for the same time. Romney stopped by the breakfast restaurant 45 minutes ahead of schedule. When Gingrich arrived, just minutes after Romney's bus left the parking lot, he said: "Where's Mitt?"

Earlier, Gingrich had a message for voters during a stop at The Grapevine restaurant in Boiling Springs not long after the polls opened: Come out and vote for me if you want to help deny Romney nomination.

He told diners who were enjoying plates of eggs and grits that he was the "the only practical conservative vote" to the rival he called a Massachusetts moderate. "Polls are good, votes are better," he said.

Gingrich also said he would put a stop to federal actions against South Carolina's voter ID and immigration laws.

Romney's agreement to participate in Florida debates Monday in Tampa and Thursday in Jacksonville was seen as an acknowledgement of a prolonged battle with Gingrich.

"This could be real close," said Romney as he chatted on the phone with a voter Saturday morning and urged the man to go vote.

Romney still has significant advantages over his three remaining Republican rivals, including an enormous financial edge and a well-organized campaign.

He suffered a symbolic blow when the Iowa Republican Party, without explanation late Friday, declared Santorum as winner of the Jan. 3 caucus, days after saying incomplete vote results precluded it from doing just that. Santorum was 34 votes ahead of Romney, but because eight precincts never turned in certified results, the state chairman had said on Thursday the party could not declare a winner. About two weeks earlier, Romney was said to have won by eight votes.

With his Iowa victory now rescinded, losing in South Carolina would be a setback that could draw the primary contest out much longer. Just 10 days ago, Romney's campaign team was looking ahead to the general election as it anticipated a quick sweep in early primaries.

By Saturday, state Treasurer Curtis Loftis, a top Romney backer, was on an automated telephone message attacking Gingrich's ethics record in Congress, while Romney's wife, Ann, was on a separate one urging voters to consider the candidates character.

"Look at how they've lived their life," she says. "And that's why I think it's so important to understand the character of a person."

Before the ham house standoff that wasn't, Romney stood outside his Greenville headquarters and undertook a new attack on Gingrich. He called on Gingrich to further explain his contracts with Freddie Mac, the housing giant, and release any advice he had provided to the company. He has said the contracts earned two of his companies more than $1.6 million over eight years, but that he only pocketed about $35,000 a year himself.

`I'd like to see what he actually told Freddie Mac. Don't you think we ought to see it?" Romney said.

It was another response to pressure on Romney to release his tax returns before Republican voters finish choosing a nominee.

A day earlier, Romney had called on Gingrich to release information related to an ethics investigation of Gingrich in the 1990s. Gingrich argues that GOP voters need to know whether the wealthy former venture capital executive's records contain anything that could hurt the party's chances against Obama.

Romney has said he will release several years' worth of tax returns in April. Gingrich has called on him to release them much sooner. On Saturday, Romney refused to answer questions from reporters about the returns and whether his refusal to release them had hurt him with South Carolina voters.

Gingrich, buoyed by Perry's endorsement as he left the race Thursday, has called Romney's suggestion about releasing ethics investigation documents a "panic attack" brought on by sinking poll numbers.

The stakes were high for Saturday's vote. The primary winner has gone on to win the Republican nomination in every election since 1980.

It's very important, but it's not do or die," Paul told Fox News

Some of South Carolina's notorious 11th-hour devilry ? fake reports in the form of emails targeting Gingrich and his ex-wife Marianne ? emerged in a race known as much for its nastiness as for its late-game twists.

"Unfortunately, we are now living up to our reputation," said South Carolina GOP strategist Chip Felkel.

State Attorney Gen. Alan Wilson ordered a preliminary review of the phony messages to see if any laws had been broken.

Gingrich's ex-wife burst into the campaign this week when she alleged in an ABC News interview that her former husband had asked her for an "open marriage," a potentially damaging claim in a state where the Republican primary electorate includes a potent segment of Christian conservatives. The thrice-married Gingrich, who has admitted to marital infidelities, angrily denied her accusation.

TSA admits errors in NY searches of elderly women (AP)

NEW YORK ? Security screeners at Kennedy Airport violated procedures this fall when they asked two elderly women to show them medical devices concealed beneath their clothing, senior Homeland Security officials acknowledged in correspondence made public this week.

In a pair of letters to U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and state Sen. Michael Gianaris, Transportation Security Administration Administrator John Pistole and Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Betsy Markey said screeners at the airport will get refresher training on how to handle passengers with medical conditions.

The action followed complaints by Lenore Zimmerman, 85, of Long Beach, N.Y., and Ruth Sherman, 88, of Sunrise, Fla., that they were effectively strip-searched while traveling separately through the airport in November.

Zimmerman, who weighs less than 110 pounds and is in a wheelchair, said that after being escorted into a private room she had to raise her shirt and lower her pants for a female TSA agent and remove her back brace, which was put through an X-ray machine.

Sherman said was humiliated when two female screeners made her lower her sweatpants so they could examine her colostomy bag.

In their letters to the New York politicians, Pistole and Markey disputed some of the details of the women's accounts.

They said Zimmerman had raised her shirt voluntarily. "At no point was the passenger asked to remove any items of clothing," the letters said. But in her letter, Markey acknowledged that Zimmerman should have been allowed to leave the brace on.

"It is not standard procedure for TSOs to screen back braces through the X-ray, and TSA apologizes for this employee's action," she wrote.

Likewise, she said Sherman had also initially lowered her pants voluntarily, and was never asked to remove any items of clothing, but added that "it is not standard operating procedure for colostomy devices to be visually inspected, and TSA also apologizes for this employee's action."

Zimmerman and her son didn't immediately return messages Wednesday from The Associated Press, but she told the Daily News that she was upset that federal officials were still insisting that she hadn't been asked to remove clothing.

"They're lying," she said. "I don't have a problem with the back brace. I have a problem with being strip-searched," she said.

Schumer reiterated his call for the TSA to designate a passenger advocate at each airport, "who vulnerable passengers can turn to when they feel they are being asked to undergo overly invasive, embarrassing screening procedures."

"The TSA needs to do a whole lot more than just provide `refresher training' to screening agents," he said.

Gianaris said it was a "positive step" for federal officials to acknowledge mistakes in the way the women were handled, but he said the agency still appeared to be dragging its feet in acknowledging the severity of the problem, and still needs to do more to ensure that passengers "don't have to make a choice between degrading themselves or passing through security."

Oil prices climb on improving US jobs numbers (AP)

Oil prices are climbing after the government said the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits dropped to its lowest point since April 2008.

Benchmark oil rose 83 cents to $101.42 per barrel Thursday morning in New York. Brent crude rose 83 cents to $111.49 per barrel in London.

The Labor Department says the number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell to 352,000 last week. The news gives investors more confidence that demand for oil and other energy products may grow stronger as more people head back to work.

At the pump, AAA says the national average for gasoline remains at $3.38 a gallon. That's about 17 cents more than a month ago and 27 cents more than a year ago.

Prototype 2 in the comics, Remedy's "Alan Wake Merchandise Idea Challenge," brains are what's for dinner at Capcom's Tokyo bar, and more make up this week's non-gaming game news.

Radical Entertainment and Dark Horse Prototype comic on the way in February

Providing a bridge between the first and upcoming second Prototype games, Dark Horse and the game's developer Radical Entertainment have produced a digital comic which will hit biweekly February 15th, allowing you to catch up with the first game's hero, Alex Mercer and the sequel's protagonist, Sgt. James Heller. We've got the synopsis and the first look a the series here:

The all-new digital comic series will be broken into three original stories that bridge the gap between the original blockbuster game and the highly anticipated sequel, PROTOTYPE 2. The first entry, ?The Anchor,? illustrated by Paco D?az, continues the story of Alex Mercer, the protagonist from the first game, while the second story, "The Survivors," illustrated by Chris Staggs, follows a small group of residents of New York trying to escape the city after it has been transformed into NYZ with the outbreak of the Blacklight virus.

The third and final story, illustrated by Victor Drujiniu, is "The Labyrinth" and provides fans a deeper look into the backstory of PROTOTYPE 2?s new protagonist, Sgt. James Heller. Each comic in the series will be available at Digital.Darkhorse.com every other week beginning February 15, 2012.

Tokyo's Capcom Bar's gaming Menu

With the Capcom Bar opening in Tokyo later this month, the publisher has released images of some of the items that will be on their theme restaurant's menu. The Anime News Network has some of the preview images from the gaming-related menu which has selections from Monster Hunter, Sengoku Basara, and of course, Resident Evil and Phoenix Wright. While that little mound of brain looks a little too gimmicky and processed to be appetizing, and yet there's something strangely appetizing about the "Well-done meat."

Remedy wants your Alan Wake swag ideas

Over on the game's Facebook page, Remedy has been soliciting users' best ideas for their "Alan Wake Merchandising Challenge," a contest where fans of the series can submit their ideas for the best tie-in merchandise to win... a pile of Alan Wake merchandise. The contest is currently running through December 31st and the results are being voted up and down by the community.

My suggestion: the box of unspeakable darkness and horror, a sealed box filled with unspeakable darkness and horror. Retails for $99.99.

Oh, Videogames is your look back at the embarrassing history of covers

Okay, yeah it's cheap and easy humor to poke fun at the wonderful absurdity of videogame covers of the past, but it's also really, really funny. Oh, Videogames is a Tumblr blog devoted to showing off the long, tragic history of game marketing. They're not all actually bad, but the predominant theme seems to be selling something that wasn't quite the game.

I will say the posts devoted to surf and skating action games makes me wish those kind of colorful sports titles were still a thing.
