HR Club Philippines: TOP 7 TRAITS RECRUITMENT OFFICERS ...

HR Club Philippines, in cooperation with Businessmaker Academy, conducted an informal survey of 100 HR officers and business owners in Metro Manila on what traits and skills they look for when they are recruiting potential employees for their company.

The results are in and l would like to share them with you, dear job hunters, so that you may gain insight on what employers are looking for and what you can aspire to improve to get the job that you want.

So here are the Top 7 Traits we noted from our survey respondents:

1. COMMUNICATION SKILLS

According to the survey, Communication Skills ranks as the highest quality that employers want. This came out in 85% of the responses.

Tips and Commentary: When we talk about communication skills, most applicants immediately think that it?s about English Proficiency. This is mostly true as English is the preferred language in the field of business and the corporate world. Many companies look for people who can read, write and speak English very well, especially if they have international clients.

However, let?s dig deeper and find out what Communication Skills is really about. Communication Skills is not just about writing and speaking English well. It encompasses reading, listening, writing and speaking ability. It is about how well you can understand and interpret what you hear and read, as well as how good you are at getting your message across in such a way that other people can understand you.

To improve your Communication Skills, I suggest reading as much books, newspapers and articles as you can. Discuss these with others so that you can test yourself if you truly understood the message, while you practice getting your message across. If English proficiency is your weakness, use the English language more often. If it?s another language, do the same. Practice, practice, practice! The only way you can improve your communication skills is for you to, well, communicate.

2. ATTITUDE, VALUES & PERSONALITY

The second most common characteristics that our respondents look for is attitude, values or personality. This came out in 72% of the responses.

Tips and Commentary: When we talk about attitude, values and personality, we are talking about a person?s principles, moral standards, ethics and even disposition that affect his or her behaviour in the workplace. Evaluating a person on these is not an exact science. Although there are measurements that can be used, most recruitment officers rely on their intuition, gut feel and judgement to determine if the applicant is fit for the prevailing culture of their company.

You have to understand that values and cultures may greatly differ from one company to another. Some companies put more importance to teamwork, other companies prefer individual achievements while others are very competitive in nature. Some companies encourage employees to be proactive with lean set ups, while some companies have bureaucratic environments.

To improve in this area, it is best to go with positivity since practically all companies want positive people in their company. You would also want to determine your identity as a person and your principles in life. When you know who you are, it will be easier for you to see if you will fit in a particular company. I do not suggest changing yourself drastically and giving up your principles to fit in, but rather, it is more important to find a work environment and culture that suits your personality and values.

3. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

The third most common trait that our respondents mentioned is Interpersonal Skills. This came out in 53% of the responses

Tips and Commentary: When we talk about interpersonal skills, we are basically referring to people skills---your ability to interact socially with others. Most people mix this up with communication skills because both are part of the realms of communication.

However, let?s draw the distinction between the two. Communication Skills is the general umbrella where interpersonal skills would fall under. The basic requirement of Communication Skills is your ability to read, listen, write and speak a language well. People Skills, on the other hand, consists of being basically good at communicating but it is more than that. It reflects how well you are able to relate and work with people, which is highly important in any organization. This is where non-verbal communication such as facial expression and emotions come in.

To improve your Interpersonal Skills, learn how to smile. This may sound very simple, but it nevertheless is very important in the workplace. When I interview job applicants, even before I ask questions, the first thing I look at is the applicant?s facial expression. I?ve interviewed so many applicants in my lifetime and you would be surprised that there are many who have very limited smiles. Interestingly, when I talk to other managers who make the second interviews, they would tell me that the reason why they rejected a person is that he or she isn?t too smiley or not very pleasant. Other things you can do to improve interpersonal skills is go back and learn the basics---etiquette, good manners, respect, politeness, courtesy, ?pakisama? and ?pagunawa sa kapwa?.

4. TECHNICAL SKILLS / JOB KNOWLEDGE

The fourth most common trait that our respondents mentioned is Technical Skills and Job Knowledge. This came out in 49% of the responses

Tips and Commentary: When we talk about technical skills or job knowledge, we are referring to the competencies required for the particular job that you are applying for. Each job position requires your ability to do tasks and functions. For instance, if you are applying as a Customer Service Representative, the employer may include customer focus, problem solving, product and process knowledge as part of the competencies required. If you are applying as an Office Secretary, the employer may include computer literacy, typing speed, filing and documentation as competencies required for the Job.

To improve your technical skills and job knowledge, you may want to go for additional training on your particular field of interest. Try to learn new skills that will help you be more competitive in the job market. We are not talking about just getting a certificate or a degree although that would help, but rather learning how to do things, understanding concepts and applying them on the job. However, if you do not have the time and resources to pursue formal training, the least you can do is study the job requirements and specifications and prepare well for the interview, preferably mentioning these to impress the recruitment officer. This will show that you did not randomly applying at just any company, but you are interested in the job you are applying for.

This is the first part of the article. The second part will be published on April 25. Do watch out for it.

Mars' mystery cloud explained

Wayne Jaeschke

This photo from amateur astronomer Wayne Jaeschke shows cloud cover on the right side of the Martian disk, with the tops of the planet's huge shield volcanoes sticking through the clouds. For more from Jaeschke, check out his Exosky website.

By Alan Boyle

A week ago, amateur astronomers were marveling over a curious cloud that they spotted on the Mars ? and now the professionals are focusing in on an explanation.

The cloud was intriguing because it was most noticeable along the very edge of the Martian disk, and seemed to project high into the atmosphere. Some suspected that it might be a cloud of dust thrown up by an impact on the Red Planet. So, over the past week, professionals and amateurs have been working together to collect imagery and analyze the hazy spot.

"It's most likely a condensate cloud/haze, H2O in composition," Bruce Cantor, senior staff scientist at Malin Space Science Systems, said in an email that was circulated to other experts. "Similar type of phenomena have been seen in early-morning orbital observations in the past."

Cantor pointed to an earlier example of morning-limb clouds, observed by NASA's Mars Global Surveyor in the planet's northern hemisphere in 2003.

Amateur astronomer Wayne Jaeschke, who first observed this month's Martian cloud, appreciated getting the word.

"That's very interesting, as my first report on the subject suggested that it was a high-altitude water-ice cloud," Jaeschke told me in an email. "I wouldn't be surprised if that's what the consensus turns out to be."

Checking scenarios
Jaeschke said that he's been in contact with other astronomers who are looking at data from the Mars Color Imager, or MARCI, which is one of the instruments on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. "To date, the data shows that there was no abnormal dust activity at Mars' southern latitudes, further reducing the possibility that this was some sort of high-altitude dust storm, impact strike, or other similar phenomena," he said.

The fact that MARCI saw no abnormal cloud activity during its passes at 3 a.m. and 3 p.m. local Mars standard time suggests that the mystery cloud was a transient feature ? for example, morning clouds that dissipated by the afternoon on Mars. "Still, researchers are suspect of normal cloud activity, due to the large size of the phenomenon and apparent altitude," Jaeschke said.

One of the more exotic scenarios suggests that the morning clouds were lit up by localized auroral activity, sparked by a recent string of solar storms. "Mars doesn't have a magnetic field similar to that on Earth, but Mars Global Surveyor mapped 'umbrella-like' localized fields back in 2004," Jaeschke said.

THEMIS on the case
The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment, or HiRISE, the powerful camera on Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, is designed to take up-close looks at the Martian surface, but not the atmosphere. So HiRISE is unlikely to shed any additional light on the cloud question. But the team for the Mars Odyssey orbiter's Thermal Emission Imaging System, or THEMIS, has been trying to get pictures of the cloud, as well as the clouds hanging around Mars' big shield volcanoes.

"Of the nine images we targeted over the region with that large cloud, only four have been downlinked so far," Jonathon Hill, a member of the THEMIS mission operations team, told me in an email on Wednesday. "And unfortunately, it looks like the cloud either moved or is so think that we can't really see it when we're zoomed in that close."

Today, Hill provided another email update:

"We've downlinked a couple more of the images we targeted over the region with the large high-altitude clouds, but unfortunately they're all very clear without any sign of cloud activity.

"I'm starting to suspect that the clouds people have been photographing are just so wispy and thin that when we look at them zoomed in at about 100 meters per pixel, there's just not enough cloud structure for us to make out. But it is a cool example of how, even though we have a camera in orbit, we have a very limited perspective, which is why we need to combine data from multiple instruments, including ground-based observations, to study the planet as a whole.

"Next week we have some passes over the large Tharsis volcanoes, so we're planning images of their summits, where there's usually a lot of cloud activity this time of year. The good thing about those clouds is that they are anchored by the summits, so we know exactly where they'll be. Hopefully we'll be able to see some structure in them.

"I'll definitely keep you updated. Our atmospheric scientists can't wait to get some good visible/infrared images of these late spring clouds!"

Bottom line? The likeliest explanation for the mystery cloud seems to be the one Cantor came up with: It's a seldom-seen but far from unprecedented manifestation of Martian morning weather. For more of the expert amateur opinion, check out the Unmanned Spaceflight website, the Cloudy Nights online forum and the Mars Observers group on Yahoo.

Where in the cosmos?
Jaeschke's picture of Mars, featuring the cloud cover surrounding the Red Planet's monster volcanoes, served as this week's "Where in the Cosmos" picture puzzle on the Cosmic Log Facebook page. It didn't take long for my Facebook friends to figure out what the picture showed, and even name the four big volcanoes (Olympus Mons, Ascraeus Mons, Pavonis Mons and Arsia Mons). For solving this week's mystery so quickly, Rick Casey and Shelton Howard will be getting some 3-D glasses in the mail, plus a 3-D picture of yours truly. Keep your eyes peeled for next week's "Where in the Cosmos" puzzle on Facebook.

The Martian mystery cloud was one of the subjects discussed during this week's Space Hangout, hosted by Pamela Gay with Emily Lakdawalla, Ian O'Neill and yours truly as commentators.

The Finance Blog: Income Tax Slabs for Financial Year 2012-13

Here?s the Income Tax Slabs for the financial year 2012-13, based on the budget presented by the Finance Minister on 16th March 2012.

Above 10,00,000 ? 30%

Comments
The Finance Minister didn?t mention about a separate tax slab for women. Either it is awaited or we will see that it is unified with the General category. I think the unification of tax slabs for men and women makes greater sense.

The first slab is raised from 1,80,000 to 2,00,000 leading to a maximum tax savings of 2,000 in this slab. People earning income between 8,00,000 and 10,00,000 are the biggest beneficiaries of the new tax slabs as this range of income moves from a 30% slab to 20% slab, resulting in a maximum tax savings of 20,000.

Overall, this is not a great relaxation for the income earning populace at a time when the cost of living has consistently been higher and is not showing any signs of cooling.

Half of US cellular subscribers own smartphones

Featured

22 hrs.

The smartphone juggernaut continues?in the U.S. According to a new Nielsen report,?49.7 percent of mobile subscribers owned smartphones as of February. That's up from 36 percent a year ago.

Two-thirds of those who got a new phone in the last three months chose a smartphone over a feature phone, the research firm says. ?

Android-based phones lead the U.S. smartphone market with a 48 percent share, while Apple's iPhone is at 32 percent, and BlackBerry is at 11.6 percent.

"Among recent acquirers who got their smartphone within the last three months, 48 percent of those surveyed in February said they chose an Android and 43 percent bought an iPhone," the research firm said. Only 5 percent opted for a BlackBerry.

Another report, from comScore earlier this month, said that Android is on nearly half the phones ?carried by the country's 101 million smartphone subscribers, while about another third use iPhones.

RIM, which makes BlackBerry, has continued to decline as a favorite among U.S. purchasers. In the summer of 2011, Nielsen pegged RIM's U.S. market share at about?20 percent.

In Nielsen's?"State of the Media: The Mobile Media" report, released in December and based on a survey of 25,000 mobile customers,?the research firm said smartphone ownership is predominant among those age 18 to 34.

Nearly two-thirds -- 64 percent -- of 25? to 34-year-olds and 53 percent of 18? to 24-year-olds own smartphones, "and they have led in smartphone penetration compared to other age groups since 2009."

Peter Cook Slams Christie Brinkley Interview as "Shameless"

Peter Cook is not about to give his ex-wife what she wants.

A day after Christie Brinkley broke down alongside Matt Lauer (below) and said she simply desires "peace" from the man to whom she was married for 12 years - prior to an ugly, much-publicized affair - Cook has released a statement laying into the former model.

"Christie was entirely dishonest about the circumstances surrounding the current court action which was precipitated by her and… is doing further damage to our children," Cook says, railing on against his ex:

"I am also shocked by the blatant lies she told regarding our divorce proceedings of four years ago, including denying the indisputable fact that she fought for an open courtroom despite the warnings it would harm our children.

[Brinkley] will stop at nothing to continue the drama in our lives in order to harass me and keep herself relevant in the media."

Cook concluded by playing the kids' card again, stating:

"Clearly, Christie does not believe I was punished enough four years ago for my indiscretions in our marriage, but for the sake of our children I wish she would find a way to move on.”

And if she doesn't, Cook is glad to bash the heck out her in public again. For the sake of their children, of course.

Sleep apnea puts patients at risk for delirium after surgery

Sleep apnea puts patients at risk for delirium after surgery [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 27-Mar-2012

DURHAM, N.C. An anecdotal observation of a possible link between sleep apnea and post-surgical delirium has been measured and confirmed by a team of researchers at the Duke University Medical Center.

"The association between sleep apnea and postoperative delirium is big news because it may offer us a way to control postoperative delirium which can be devastating," said senior author Madan Kwatra, Ph.D., who is associate professor of anesthesiology at Duke.

The study appears in the April 2012 issue of Anesthesiology.

Delirium is not a minor consequence. The condition involves an acute and fluctuating consciousness and ability to understand, and is associated with health problems and higher risk of death right after surgery. Delirium is a strong predictor of mortality even 10 years after surgery.

There is hope for prevention, Kwatra said. "If the association between pre-existing sleep apnea and postoperative delirium discovered in this study is confirmed by a larger study, we may be able to prevent postoperative delirium by treating sleep apnea before and immediately after surgery."

The prospective study investigated patients who were having a total knee replacement, a routine procedure for older patients that restores function and reduces pain.

Out of 106 patients in the study, 27 developed delirium after surgery. Eight out of the 15 patients in the study who had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea experienced post-operative delirium, or 53 percent. By comparison, 20 percent of the patients without apnea (19 out of 91) experienced delirium.

In the analysis, apnea was the only statistically significant factor that predicted delirium out of many medical conditions that were analyzed.

The study provides early evidence that doctors might do better presurgical screening for sleep apnea and introduce effective therapy for obstructive sleep apnea as a way to reduce the risk of delirium, Kwatra said. The causes of postsurgical delirium are still unknown, but lack of oxygen before or after surgery or possibly immune factors that lead to inflammation may play a role, he said.

The study findings support recent recommendations to screen for and treat obstructive sleep apnea in an effort to reduce respiratory and cardiovascular problems associated with obstructive sleep apnea.

James Cameron returns from deepest spot on Earth

Director James Cameron reached the Earth's deepest point and returned, in a seven-hour solo journey to explore a place only two men have gone before.

"Just arrived at the ocean's deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can't wait to share what I'm seeing w/ you," tweeted the director of "Titanic" and "Avatar," from his state-of-the-art diving vessel Deepsea Challenger, when he reached his target.

Cameron used a specially designed submarine to descend nearly seven miles to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, an area 200 miles southwest of the Pacific island of Guam.

He began the dive Monday at approximately 5:15 a.m. local time (early Sunday afternoon on the U.S. East Coast), according Stephanie Montgomery of the National Geographic Society, where Cameron is an explorer-in-residence. National Geographic set up a website documenting the dive challenge.

"RELEASE, RELEASE, RELEASE!" were the last words Cameron uttered before beginning the dive, according to a Twitter post from the expedition.

Cameron touched the bottom after a 2-hour-and-36-minute descent, then studied the ocean floor for several hours before making his 70-minute ascent back to the surface, according to National Geographic's own report.

Billionaire Paul Allen had been following the dive action from a helicopter while monitoring Cameron's communications via special underwater radio technology. Allen kept followers updated via his Twitter feed. "Sub now deeper than everest at 32160 speed 2.0 knots not long to seabead now," wrote Allen, shortly before Cameron touched the bottom.

As Cameron's Deepsea Challenger emerged, at 12 noon local time (10 p.m. Eastern Time), Allen wrote "#deepseachallenge has surfaced, now for recovery..." A short while later, he reported, "Saw James Cameron Emerge from #Deepseachallenge sub and wave back at us as we flew over in the Octopus Helo...safe and sound!"

Allen posted several pictures of the capsule in the water, and then one showing the capsule being hauled onto its support ship.

The scale of the trench is hard to grasp ? it's 120 times larger than the Grand Canyon and more than a mile deeper than Mount Everest is tall (hence Allen's "Everest" remark). Once Cameron reached the bottom aboard his 12-ton, lime-green sub, he planned to collect samples for biologists and geologists to study.

There's considerable wiggle room built in, however, as the submarine Cameron helped design has the capability to support life for a 56-hour dive.

The first and only time anyone dove to these depths was in 1960. Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard and U.S. Navy Capt. Don Walsh took nearly five hours to reach the bottom and stayed just 20 minutes. They didn't have much to report on what they saw there, however, because their submarine kicked up so much sand from the ocean floor they couldn't see much.

One of the risks of a dive so deep is extreme water pressure. At 6.8 miles below the surface, the pressure is the equivalent of three SUVs sitting on your toe.

Cameron told The Associated Press in an interview after a 5.1 mile-deep practice run near Papua New Guinea earlier this month that the pressure "is in the back of your mind." The submarine would implode in an instant if it leaked, he said.

But while he was a little apprehensive beforehand, he wasn't scared or nervous while underwater.

"When you are actually on the dive you have to trust the engineering was done right," he said.

The latest dive site, which is at the deepest point in the Mariana Trench, is named Challenger Deep after the British naval vessel HMS Challenger that used sound to first measure its depth.

The film director has been an oceanography enthusiast since childhood and has made 72 deep-sea submersible dives. Thirty-three of those dives have been to the wreckage of the Titanic, the subject of his 1997 hit film.

Katy Perry Reissue Is Teenage Dream 'With A Face-Lift'

Perry closes the Dream chapter with Complete Confection.
By James Montgomery

Katy Perry's Teenage Dream: <i>The Complete Confection</i>
Photo: Jive

More than 20 months after Katy Perry released her smash Teenage Dream album — and became one of the biggest pop stars on the planet — she's releasing it again, this time as a fully stocked Complete Confection, which ties up all the loose ends and, in a sense, brings this rather amazing chapter of her career to a close.

While stars reissuing their biggest albums is certainly nothing new, Perry's approach to the Confection certainly is: She makes no bones about the fact that this one is for both her die-hard fans and those still (somehow) contemplating joining her flock.

"This isn't a 'reloaded' album, it's not an album with eight songs that are new ... it's not my third record. It's my second record, with a face-lift," she laughed. "I don't want it to feel contrived or manipulated. ... I had the idea to do a reissue, like that one last 'wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am.' Like, 'Here's Teenage Dream, if you're on the edge of being a fan.' ... It's for that last push of, like, 'Jump in with me. Why not? You've already bought five songs, so you might as well complete your album!' ... But really, why I did it was because I know my fans always want more, so it's for the die-hard fan to have a nice, complete package."

And to that end, Complete Confection is packed with all the hits and remixes, not to mention a trio of unheard tracks, two of which are Dream holdovers and one brand-new song ("Wide Awake") she wrote and recorded in just two days as an added treat for her fans. It's also a setup for the next phase in her career, the upcoming "Part of Me" concert film. As Perry has proved time and time again, there's a true purpose behind everything she does these days.

"There were two songs that I had from Teenage Dream that I couldn't put on [the album] — 'Part of Me' and 'Dressin' Up' — and then I knew we were doing this re-release, so I was like, 'I've got to get into the studio, because I can't wait eight months to be able to put out this feeling that I'm feeling right now,' " she explained. "Because God knows it would take me another eight months to do another record. I couldn't do it on the fly; it just takes time to set up a record!

"So ... I had two days to write, and I wrote it with my regular crew — Dr. Luke and Max Martin and Bonnie McKee — and then I had two days to record, and it was literally like, I submitted the lyrics before I submitted the music, because it was like by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin that I put that song on the record," she continued. "But I have a film that's coming out in the summer, a concert documentary, behind-the-scenes, real in your face, and... not only did I write the song because I needed to flush that out of my system, but I wrote it for the film as well."

Product Review: Mrs. Paul&#39;s Parchment Bake | Flavorful World food ...

Reviewer?s Note: A sample of the product discussed here was provided to me for reviewing purposes at no cost.

Mrs. Paul?s Parchment Bake has officially joined the growing list of items that have likely been available in my grocer?s freezer for some time without my knowing it.? Having recently obtained review samples of its Roasted Garlic and Lemon Pepper varieties, I?m pleased to now know that it exists and that it can be mine again whenever I please.

As its name implies, Parchment Bake simplifies for the consumer a cooking technique that involves baking seasoned foods (tilapia filets in this case) inside a parchment paper envelope. Tilapia is among my personal seafood favorites, so I was excited to learn it was the fish being utilized here.? The cuts used tasted fresh, with none of the ?muddy? flavor that tends to be a major argument against eating tilapia for people who don?t care for the fish.? Where some meats and seafood are served in sauces whose flavors oppose or distract from the food they?re meant to complement, here the seasoning sauces do an able job of permeating the fish, but still allow the tilapia?s natural flavor to shine through.? The Roasted Garlic variety, my first sampling, is as savory as it sounds, with a taste I could revisit often and not tire of it.? The Lemon Pepper bake was equally tasty, aswim in creamy sauce that is big on lemon essence but stops short of being overly so, and is sugary enough to smear on unfrosted cupcakes.? The level of sweetness took me by surprise on first bite, but it was not unpleasant, and the more I tasted, the better it seemed to suit the fish.

This product exceeded my expectations in terms of preparation ease, overall taste, and most importantly, the moistness of the finished dish.? Sold two per box, each filet is about the size of a deck of playing cards.? In opening the box, you?re halfway to your finished meal. Place the sealed parchment envelopes inside your pre-heated oven in a baking pan with the envelope?s seam facing up, and your entr?e is done less than 25 minutes later.? When removed from the oven, the fish flaked easily with a fork and retained enough moisture (a guiding principle of cooking food in parchment) to stay melt-in-your-mouth tender.

One caveat for those fond of toaster oven cooking is that preparation by this method is not recommended.? Another is that as a man with what I?ll call a ?healthy? appetite (though one could argue to the contrary, given my admitted occasional portion-control issues) I imagine I could easily consume a two-serving box by myself, even accounting for added side dishes.? And while that may seem less a shortcoming of the product than of the reviewer and thus an unfair judgment, I mention it more as a testament to this product.? Because it tastes that good; so good that I found myself pondering what toll regular indulgence would take on my wallet. ?Having said that, Parchments Bake ends up being a cheaper per person dinner option than one would find in any restaurant seafood entr?e.? Still, those with larger appetites and those feeding large families will want to carefully consider whether this product, deliciousness notwithstanding, is the best, most economical option for them as a regular meal.? As an occasional treat however, in those instances when one is unable or too tired to prepare an elaborate meal, this is an encouraging product, and one I look forward to trying again soon (I?m looking at you, Garlic Butter and Classic Grilled!)
