AMSIA MOTORS, GLOBAL: Auto finance & Sales rising, by 2017 !

When it comes to providing auto financing, China is steps away from countries including Canada and America, but this is about to change.

The huge hike in China?s auto sales is no longer the subject of China?s newspaper headlines. Back in 2011 when CAAM (China Association of Automobile Manufacturers) projected that the sales of passenger cars in the country will likely rise 11 percent to 16 million vehicles, while the sales of commercial vehicles will drop 3 percent to 3.9 million units, no one imagined that within one year, China would also diversify its market for vehicle loans.
So what exactly is happening in China?s auto financing industry? It has witnessed two recent major changes: one is a rise in demand for expensive vehicles, and the other is a rise in the number of local and foreign automobile manufacturers that are currently offering auto-financing, some of which include Volkswagen, BMW, and Nissan Motor Co.?

While the rise in demand/sales was expected, the high sale of these vehicles to China?s youth population was unexpected. China?s youth are willing to go-into-debt for the sake of owning an expensive vehicle before their late 20?s.
?Young Chinese are very comfortable with the idea of credit to buy big-ticket items,? said Shuan Rein, managing director of China Market Research in Shanghai.? It doesn?t make sense for them to have to work for 5 to 10 years to save up for it.?
Young Chinese adults are not the only ones that are willing to cash-out a lot of money to invest in expensive vehicles. Manufacturing companies including Volkswagen, BMW, and Nissan Motor CO., are also making huge investments.

?Volkswagen, the No.2 foreign manufacturer in China after GM, plans to invest 2 billion yuan to expand auto financing in China this year,? said Cai Xue, a VW spokesman in Beijing. The company also has plans to offer financing to customers seeking to upgrade their old models. Since its 56 percent increase in auto sales back in 2011, Volkswagen has seen so much more demand for its products.
BMW says its China loans portfolio has risen to more than 10 billion yuan, a six-fold increase over 2010. The company forecasts that a quarter of all auto purchases in China will be funded by loans in three years and that half will be financed by 2025.
Nissan Motor Co., the biggest Japanese automaker by sales in China, has also invested in auto financing; the company believes that credit used to purchase vehicles will definitely be the new trend in China. ?Currently, buyers of expensive cars seek financing while those who want more modest vehicles typically pay cash,? said Kimiyasu Nakamura, president of Nissan?s Joint venture.?

Auto financing companies provided about 200 billion yuan ($31 billion) of loans last year, according to a carmaker in China.

While these auto manufacturers expand their auto-financing, other manufacturers and or companies including Amsia Motors will benefit from more opportunities to market their products. As young adults gain more access to financing their vehicle purchases, certain products only marketed to a specific age group, can now be marketed to them. And these include the sales of electric cars.
?We think there will be more and more young people using our loan products when they buy cheaper cars,? Nakamura said last month at a Nissan event in the northern port city of Dalian, where the automaker is building a new plant.
However, no matter how popular auto financing becomes, not every young adult will be eligible for this form of credit. Credit scores will play a huge role in the decision process. Despite this factor, though, China?s banks continue to see increases in the number of overdue credit card balances associated with the purchases of vehicles.

Based on a recent report filed by the People?s Bank of China, Credit card balances overdue for more than six months rose 9.1 percent from the previous quarter to 12 billion yuan as of the end of March.
Clearly, China has benefited greatly from introducing auto financing into its economy. If the auto financing industry continues to expand at the current rate, the country may soon be three steps ahead of Canada and America; this, however, will all depend on how well China?s automotive companies can control the credit-worthiness of every buyer, and how well the country?s government can monitor the industry.?

Jobs at risk as Johnston Press announces further outsourcing

Regional publisher Johnston Press has announced plans to outsource a department which develops the group?s websites, putting around 30 staff at risk of redundancy.

The company announced proposals last week to outsource the work carried out by its technology solutions department, which is based in Peterborough, to IT services firm Endava.

An employee told HTFP that transfer to Endava was believed to be on offer but it was not yet known if this would be in London or Romania ? where the company has some of its delivery centres.

It comes after the publisher announced plans last month to outsource half of its advertising creation teams to India, with the loss of 60-70 UK jobs.

The technology department is responsible for the publisher?s digital presence, including the development and operational support?of the group?s websites, apps and content management system.

Simon Pownall, group technology solutions director at Johnston Press, made the announcement to staff last Wednesday, saying they would retain 13 staff members from the department.

His announcement said: ?Following a detailed review of the Technology Solutions department the company proposes to outsource the integration, development and operational support services for the group?s websites, apps, content management system and services from Johnston Press to Endava (Managed Services) Ltd.

?Endava is a London based IT Service company, specialising in consultancy, development services and technical support in relation to application software and website delivery.

?Endava have significant experience in delivering operational services and development projects for blue chip companies in both media and non-media markets.?

?The company will retain the services of 13 staff in Technology Solutions who are involved with commercial and associated systems, and the management of outsourcing relationships.

?We have commenced consultation today with the individuals affected and anticipate that this process will be complete by the middle of September 2012.?

Endava?s webside says it has offices in London and New York and delivery centers in Romania and Moldova.

Yemeni gunmen vacate Interior Ministry after protest

DUBAI (Reuters) - Yemeni tribesmen agreed on Monday to vacate the Interior Ministry after storming it the day before in a protest for jobs, an official said - an incident that highlighted the ongoing turmoil in a country where al Qaeda militancy has alarmed world powers.

In another indication of instability in the Arabian Peninsula country, an Italian embassy security officer was kidnapped on Sunday. The Yemeni government said the hunt for the abductors had begun.

The country is struggling to establish order following the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh in February after a year of Arab Spring protests against his rule.

An Interior Ministry source said it had persuaded the 100 tribesmen, seen as loyal to the former president Saleh, to vacate the Interior Ministry in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. The tribesmen were demanding to be enlisted in the police force.

"The president formed a committee to negotiate," the source said, referring to the country's leader Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

"They were persuaded to end the occupation in return for a promise to respond to their demands."

The Italian security officer was kidnapped near his country's embassy in Sanaa. A spokesman for the Italian Foreign Ministry in Rome said the man was a member of the country's Carabinieri military police.

In a phone call with his Italian counterpart, Giulio Terzi, Yemeni Foreign Minister Abubakr al-Qirbi said the hunt for the abductors had begun, state news agency Saba said late on Sunday. It said nothing about identity of the kidnappers.

The abduction followed the kidnapping in March of the Saudi deputy consul in Yemen's port city of Aden, Abdallah al-Khalidi, by al Qaeda-linked militants. The kidnappers have demanded the release of women detainees held in Saudi prisons.

During the uprising that toppled Saleh, militants associated with al Qaeda strengthened their position in areas of south and east Yemen, placing further tests on the central government control in a country where tribalism and regionalism run strong.

Tribesmen often kidnap foreigners and bomb oil and gas pipelines as a way to press demands on authorities.

Also on Monday, Yemen delivered its first oil shipment from the Maarib pipeline to its Aden refinery after a nine-month halt because of tribal attacks that left Yemen relying on imports and Saudi fuel donations, a refinery official told Reuters.

Yemen's location next to leading oil exporter Saudi Arabia and astride key world shipping routes has heightened regional and Western concern over the country's security situation.

The disorder has alarmed the United States, a backer of Saleh who has sought to ensure that his successor makes fighting al Qaeda his priority. Yemen now ranks alongside Pakistan and Afghanistan for U.S. policymakers concerned with the spread of al Qaeda networks.

Yemen's army has taken back some towns from militants, who struck back with suicide bombings in Sanaa, while Washington has stepped up a campaign of assassinations using manless drones operated by the CIA.

Insurance Company IMEs Are Not Independent | Legal Shield | Pre ...

A certain percentage of our cases at the Law Offices of Dianne Sawaya eventually end up going to trial. If you?ve been hurt in a car accident, part of the process you?ll probably go through as we prepare for trial is what?s called a Rule 35 exam, or more commonly an ?independent medical exam? (IME). This involves being examined by the at-fault insurance company?s doctor.

In almost every case I have ever seen, the report this paid-for doctor generates is anything but independent and almost never in your favor. In Colorado (and in many other states), the insurance company doctor can get away with statements and conclusions that are not only negative, but sometimes outright false. They can claim that the crash you were in could not possibly have caused your injuries. They can say yes, maybe you are injured, but your injuries came before the crash. I?ve even seen cases where a doctor says the client caused their own injuries after the crash.

Because these so-called ?independent? medical exams can be so skewed, biased or flat-out wrong, your car accident attorney Colorado often will have to spend money on another doctor to perform a truly independent exam. That way we can counter the halo effect ? the tendency of many people put doctors on a pedestal.

With a skilled deposition, our Denver personal injury lawyers often can quickly poke holes in an IME. How much money did the doctor make from that insurance company last year? In the last five years? From other insurance companies? And there are other legal areas where we can challenge an IME doctor?s findings. If a case goes to trial, an objective medical report from our doctor and our ability to point out the conflict of interest the insurance company doctor has can neutralize the jury?s doctor halo thinking.

If you?ve been in an accident, you need an attorney who will get you the money you deserve. Give me a call at (303) 758-4777, email me at DLS@dlslawfirm.com or visit our website at www.dlslawfirm.com for more information.

Let?s talk about your case. There?s no cost or obligation. We?ll help you get the money you and your family deserve for the injuries you?ve suffered. And remember: If we take your case, we don?t get paid unless you get paid.

Concocting The Right Business Strategy: Organizational Value ...

A cornerstone of corporate strategy is knowing your organization?s true value proposition and using that knowledge to innovate the business model so that existing customers can be better served and share of markets can be extended. Developing effective strategy requires business leaders to examine their value statements and to learn how to utilize and navigate the Organizational Value Quadrant (OVQ)1 model. The four quadrants of organizational value define distinct operating models that relate the company?s positioning relative to the markets served by the business. Knowing which quadrant your business lives in and understanding how to navigate within the OVQ form the backbone of every strategic plan. This article explains the organizational value quadrants, and what they mean to a business in terms of strategy and investment.

Value Proposition; how well do you know it and live it?

For any business, understanding the company?s value proposition is the first step in strategy formulation and must be addressed as a key input to the OVQ discussion.

A value proposition can be thought of a business or marketing statement that summarizes why a consumer should?buy a product or use a service. In essence, this statement should help the firm connect with a potential target market in a way that differentiates a particular?product or service as to how it will add more?value or solve a problem better than other similar offerings.

?

The purest three elements of a value proposition are:

The connection: What is it that makes the product or service inspirational and innovative? The connection must compel the customer to want the product and say, ?I need this?.

The differentiation: What is it that makes the product or service indispensable? The differentiation should help eliminate the thought of substitutes in the mind of the buyer.

The substantiation: What facts can you state about the product or service to help create credibility and trust? The substantiation should help the potential buyer to believe in the product or service and take action.

Organizational Value Quadrants

Businesses operate on models designed for value creation that are in alignment with their stated value propositions for each class of products and services. While the value proposition helps communicate the marketing and sales message, the business model must deliver the value promised. That leads to the discussion of value quadrants.

Strategists should always be thinking in terms of value quadrants when considering their firm?s competitive positioning. Method Frameworks focuses on four primary quadrants to classify the business model a company is following. The quadrants are? shown in the graphic below:

?

Each quadrant represents the focus of a company or business unit and can be thought of as the strategy and business model generally being followed. Below is a synopsis of each quadrant:

The Customer Intimacy & Synergy Quadrant

Companies operating in the Customer Intimacy & Synergy Quadrant focus on the customization and tailoring of products / services. Their missions are geared toward know their customers well, delivering what specific customers want and ?personalizing? the experience.

Customers of businesses in this quadrant have the expectation of a close relationship that is solution-based for their needs. In return, they are willing to accept a higher cost for the goods or services they are purchasing.

The Operational & Organizational Excellence Quadrant

Companies operating in the Operational & Organizational Excellence Quadrant focus operational efficiencies, supply-chain optimization, maintaining low overhead and accomplishing more with lean structures. Their missions are focused on creating predictability in delivering quality, low price, no-hassle purchase experiences and ease of use.

Customers of businesses in this quadrant have the expectation of low cost and best pricing. In return, they are willing to accept less in the areas of service and relationship intimacy.

The Customer Enrichment & Fulfillment Quadrant

Companies operating in the Customer Enrichment & Fulfillment Quadrant focus on helping their customers reaching and fulfilling their potential. Their mission themes relate to creating better lives for their customers and the opportunity for self-actualization.

Customers of businesses in this quadrant have the expectation of enjoying an experience and learning through exploration and discovery. In return, they are willing to accept a higher cost for the goods or services they are purchasing.

The Product / Service Superiority & Innovation Quadrant

Companies operating in the Product / Service Superiority & Innovation Quadrant focus on creating superior or unique ?One-of-a-Kind? value-add services or products. Their missions are geared towards innovation and creating the best products and services available in their class.

Customers of businesses in this quadrant have the expectation of receiving high quality and benefiting from innovation in the products or services being purchased. In return, they are willing to accept a higher cost for the goods or services they are purchasing.

Utilizing The Quadrants In Strategic Planning

Each quadrant groups companies relative to their value propositions and respective customer expectations. Most companies standardize on a business model and force a fit of that model to all their customers. Although it may seem illogical to combine a strategy of individual service (custom-tailored and expensive) with a model of operational excellence (where cost-minimization requires a high degree of process standardization), it can and has been done successfully. A business does not have to be entirely committed to an exclusive relationship with only one category and can use strategy to navigate and position themselves in different quadrants of the OVQ.

Sales organizations have developed impressive sophistication in analyzing their customers and segmenting them appropriately. Likewise, CFOs are highly tuned into profit analysis and many have developed the equivalent of ?heat maps? for profitability. Together, they have analyzed their sales and profit data and have developed a clear understanding of which customers are providing them with high sustained profitability. With this combined insight, customer segmentation can then be applied to strategically approach these profit areas with segment sub-strategies. Segment strategy can be applied to invest resources in securing and growing key customer relationships through integration of the company?s operations with those of the key customer?s in a tailored? and effective approach. When this approach is followed, the investments can result in lowering key customer?s cost while increasing the profits of the supplier business.

Customer integration within a value quadrant can be accomplished by tuning customer inventories, smoothing order patterns and even deploying substitute products in carefully-selected situations. The key is to partner with key customers and shift the focus of supply chain efficiency initiatives from optimization solely within the organization?s supply-chain ecosystem to an optimization of the joint vendor-customer supply chain domain. This shift creates enormous new efficiencies for both organizations and helps increase the cost of switching vendors for the customer in the future.

The example above illustrates how an organization can straddle both the operational excellence and the customer intimacy quadrants. With strategic positioning companies can begin to dominate in other quadrants through the creation of other differentiated serving models for important customer segments. Through careful strategic planning and follow-though in execution, a business can actually implement and sustain multiple parallel service models to operate successfully across quadrants.

Recap

Business leaders must begin with a clear and realistic understanding of their value proposition, the first step in strategy formulation that must be addressed as a key input to the Organizational Value Quadrant analysis. A value proposition can be thought of a business or marketing statement that summarizes why a consumer should?buy a product or use a service.

The purest three elements of a value proposition are the connection, the differentiation and the substantiation. While the value proposition helps communicate the marketing and sales message, the business model (represented by quadrants of the OVQ model) must deliver the value promised. Each quadrant represents the focus of a company or business unit and can be thought of as the strategy and business model generally being followed. The four primary quadrants to classify the business model a company are:

- Operational & Organizational Excellence

- Product / Service Superiority & Innovation

- Customer Enrichment & Fulfillment

- Customer Intimacy & Synergy

Most importantly, a business does not have to be entirely committed to an exclusive relationship with only one category and can use strategy to navigate and position themselves in different quadrants of the OVQ.

Source of fund for your business. | BRYAN'S BUSINESS LOUNGE

If you need help to fund your business, there are some things you need to do first, that can make your business more attractive to investors. The followings are an easy way to improve your business image and make it become good-looking in investors? eyes.

The most important thing, you should always talk to a qualified business attorney. There are a lot of laws pertaining to how equity capital can be raised from the public, and the laws change often. You need someone who understands not only these laws, but also how to make sure that any business contracts are written to protect you and your business, especially the fine print.

1. Using your savings or credit cards. This is the most common way for entrepreneurs to raise needed business capital. Before choosing this method however, talk with your financial advisor. You want to look at the long-term consequences of using your savings, life insurance or credit cards, especially in the event that your business venture fails, or does not bring in the projected return on investment (ROI). If you do end up financing your project using credit cards, make sure that you shop around first, and find the card that will offer you the best rate and gives you the most ?bang? for your buck.

2. Venture Capital and Angel Investors. Before even looking for venture capital, look at your company from an outsider?s point of view. Ask yourself these questions: Does your company have a solid track record? (Most venture capitalists don?t invest in start up companies). Does your company have the potential of becoming very large in the next five to seven years? (People don?t invest in your company out of the goodness of their hearts. They?re looking for a return on their investment ? the larger the better.) Does your company own a good percentage of its market, or does it stand to gain a large percentage in the next 12 to 18 months? (Contrary to popular belief, your company doesn?t have to be involved in high tech to attract venture capital). If you can answer yes to the above questions, your next step is to find a venture capital firm whose ideals and goals are in line with yours. Your next step should be to look at your ?circle of influence? and see if you know someone who can give you a personal introduction to someone at the venture capital firm. (People invest in people, not just companies.)

3. Taking your company public. Although security laws in the U.S. have made it easier for companies to go public, and offer stock as a way to raise needed funds, this is still probably the most risky choice. It is usually not a recommended option for very new or very small companies. Because of the number of legal issues involved, consulting with a knowledgeable attorney beforehand is vital. There is also a lot of stress involved in running a public company, and a considerable loss of autonomy and control. Before making this choice, be absolutely sure that this is the wisest course of action for your business.

4. Potential or Current Employees. Surprisingly, one of the most common ways (especially for new companies) to raise equity capital, is by inviting your potential or current employees the opportunity to become investors. With this method, not only do you get a really committed workforce, but many equity employees are also willing to accept a below-market wage in the beginning (especially if you do the same). There are other benefits, but this choice is not without its pitfalls as well. Again, before going this route, talk to your business attorney, and put policies into place that plan for potential problems. For example, what do you do if an employee?s work becomes substandard? Or an employee quits and goes into competition with you after learning all of the company secrets? Putting a risk management plan into place and considering all contingencies is your best bet for this option.

5. Getting money from relatives. Yes, it can seem like begging, and it?s a difficult thing to have to swallow your pride. Surprisingly, in a recent survey, almost 30% of entrepreneurs said that they raised all or part of the capital they needed through family members. If this is your choice, make sure that you have your attorney draw up a regular business contract. When approaching family members, talk to them about their investment the same way you would any other outside investor. Tell them about how much money they can make, not about how much you need their help. And make sure that you keep to your end of the agreement.

It is mot crucial which source you decide to use. What important is that you spend time on planning and following the advice of your personal. With this strategy, you will increase the probability of raising the money you need and making the relationship between you and your investors a profitable one.

'Fifty Shades Of Grey' Fashion Ads Were Kind Of Inevitable (PHOTO)

If you thought you couldn't avoid "Fifty Shades Of Grey" during your public transit commute already, it looks like the erotic novel will inundate the pages of another train diversion this fall when fashion glossies begin running a "Fifty Shades"-inspired ad campaign.

Andrew Marc's upscale brand division Marc New York took inspiration from the steamy storyline for their Fall 2012 ad campaign, which features 2012 ?Celebrity Apprentice? contestant and 2008 Miss Universe winner Dayana Mendoza and former Scottish rugby player Thom Evans. The shot captures the two in quite a suggestive pose with Ms. Mendoza's dress unzipped and Thom sporting nothing more than a towel. The overall result is surprisingly tame though considering the influence.

This is an interesting choice for the the brand's very first advertising campaign -- we're not sure how many people will be focusing on the clothes here. But, with everyone trying to snag a piece of the "Fifty Shades" pie (don't forget about all of the book's clothing, makeup and houseware lines coming your way), it's not surprising that the high fashion world would have a go at it. According to Women's Wear Daily, the ads will run in the September and October issues of Glamour and People Style Watch, so the faint of heart should be well-prepared to avert their eyes on the subway by then.

What do you think of Marc New York's "Fifty Shades Of Grey"-inspired campaign? Check out the ad and tell us what you think.

Pop music too loud and all sounds the same: official

LONDON | Thu Jul 26, 2012 3:24pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Comforting news for anyone over the age of 35, scientists have worked out that modern pop music really is louder and does all sound the same.

Researchers in Spain used a huge archive known as the Million Song Dataset, which breaks down audio and lyrical content into data that can be crunched, to study pop songs from 1955 to 2010.

A team led by artificial intelligence specialist Joan Serra at the Spanish National Research Council ran music from the last 50 years through some complex algorithms and found that pop songs have become intrinsically louder and more bland in terms of the chords, melodies and types of sound used.

"We found evidence of a progressive homogenization of the musical discourse," Serra told Reuters. "In particular, we obtained numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations - roughly speaking chords plus melodies - has consistently diminished in the last 50 years."

They also found the so-called timbre palette has become poorer. The same note played at the same volume on, say, a piano and a guitar is said to have a different timbre, so the researchers found modern pop has a more limited variety of sounds.

Intrinsic loudness is the volume baked into a song when it is recorded, which can make it sound louder than others even at the same volume setting on an amplifier.

The music industry has long been accused of ramping up the volume at which songs are recorded in a 'loudness war' but Serra says this is the first time it has been properly measured using a large database.

The study, which appears in the journal Scientific Reports, offers a handy recipe for musicians in a creative drought.

Old tunes re-recorded with increased loudness, simpler chord progressions and different instruments could sound new and fashionable. The Rolling Stones in their 50th anniversary year should take note.

Midwest drought fears worsen, grain prices jump

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Some areas of the parched U.S. Midwest were expected to get more beneficial rain on Wednesday but cities, towns and farmers were still struggling with triple-digit heat and little relief was seen from the worst drought in half a century.

Forecasters said that after weeks of hot, dry weather the northern Corn Belt from eastern Nebraska through northern Illinois was likely to see a second day of scattered rains. But in the southern Midwest including Missouri and most of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio more hot dry weather was likely.

"There's no change in the drought pattern, just thunderstorms shifting around. There are no soaking rains seen through August 8," said Andy Karst, meteorologist for World Weather Inc.

Missouri temperatures on Wednesday were hovering near 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with St Louis at 101 F at midday. The high in Chicago was expected to reach 98 F and then cool to highs in the upper 80's for the rest of the week.

The outlook sent Chicago Board of Trade grain markets bouncing higher by early afternoon after prices had come down from last week's record highs on milder weather forecasts.

Corn for September delivery was trading 6 cents a bushel higher at $7.96 and August delivery soybeans jumped 43-1/4 cents at $16.92-3/4. September wheat was up 20 cents at $8.98-3/4.

The soaring prices in the United States - the world's largest exporter of corn, soybeans and wheat - has rattled food markets worldwide on fears that food inflation will be imported, food aid or supplies for hungry nations from China to Egypt will not be available, and food riots could occur as in the past.

Major losses in the giant U.S. corn crop, which feeds dozens of products from ethanol fuels to livestock feed, have already been reported by field tours this week. Soybeans, planted later than corn, are now struggling to set pods but, if forecast rains appear, may escape the worst drought effects.

A Reuters poll on Tuesday said U.S. corn yields could fall to a 10-year low and the harvest wind up the lowest in six years. All eyes are on the U.S. Agriculture Department's next crop report on August 10, the first official estimates based on field surveys of damage. That damage has already been clear from falling weekly crop reports from key Corn Belt states.

"Monday's crop ratings showed losses on par with the damage seen during the 1988 drought if these conditions persist," said Bryce Knorr, senior editor for Farm Futures Magazine. "Weather so far has taken almost 4 billion bushels off the corn crop, so a lot of demand must still be rationed."

In Putnam County, Indiana, crop scouts this week did not even stop to inspect corn fields since a glance convinced them farmers would plow it under rather than try to harvest anything. But scouts in central Illinois on Wednesday also reported some corn fields were better than expected, having benefited from early planting and pollination after a warm winter and spring.

Livestock producers, who depend on corn and soybean meal to feed dairy cattle, hogs and poultry, have pushed the Obama administration to ease a mandate to use corn to make ethanol, so far to no avail. Ethanol now consumes 40 percent of U.S. corn.

But ethanol producers have felt the same sting from record high corn prices. U.S. ethanol production fell to a two-year low last week, the sixth straight week of declines, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday.

SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME?

The U.S. drought has been blamed on the El Nino phenomenon in the western Pacific Ocean, a warming of sea temperatures that affects global atmosphere and can prevent moisture from the Gulf of Mexico from reaching into the U.S. Midwest breadbasket.

But some scientists warn that this year's U.S. drought, already deemed the worst since 1956, is tied to climate factors that could mean even worse effects in coming years.

Dangerously hot summer days have become more common across the Midwest in the last 60 years and the region will face more potentially deadly weather as the climate warms, according to a report issued by the Union of Concerned Scientists on Wednesday.

The report looked at weather trends in five major urban areas - Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, Minneapolis and St. Louis - and smaller cities such as Peoria, Illinois, and Toledo, Ohio.

The report found that the number of hot, humid days has increased, on average, across the Midwest since the 1940s and 1950s, while hot, dry days have become hotter.

Finding relief from the heat has become more difficult, as all the cities studied now have fewer cool, dry days in the summer, and night-time temperatures have risen.

"Night-time is typically when people get relief, especially those who don't have air conditioning," said Steve Frenkel, UCS's Midwest office director. "The risks of heat-related illness and death increase with high nighttime temperatures."

In Chicago, more than 700 deaths were attributed to a heat wave in July 1995. With more extreme summer heat, annual deaths in Chicago are projected to rise from 143 from 2020-2029 to 300 between 2090-2099, the report said.

Across the Midwest, cities and towns continued to restrict water usage for watering gardens and lawns and were trying to save stressed trees with supplemental drip bags.

Reservoir and river levels were low and being watched carefully, with restriction on barge movements along the Mississippi River and on recreational boating.

Wildfires caused by lightning strikes or human carelessness continued to range from a headache to extreme danger.

In Missouri, one of the nation's driest states, the highway patrol said that smoke from grass and brush fires is creating "very dangerous driving conditions" because of limited visibility. Discarded cigarettes were cited as a factor.

"Missouri has already experienced several grass and brush fires triggered by careless handling of ignition sources," the patrol said in a statement.

Colgate quarterly profit rises, forecast maintained

(Reuters) - Colgate-Palmolive Co posted a higher quarterly profit on Thursday as the toothpaste maker increased advertising and cut costs to mitigate the impact of having the bulk of its business overseas in a difficult economic climate.

Colgate said it still expected double-digit growth in earnings per share this year on a currency-neutral basis.

Second-quarter profit was $627 million, or $1.30 per share, compared with $622 million, or $1.26 per share, a year earlier. Excluding items, Colgate earned $1.33 per share.

Analysts, on average, expected Colgate to earn $1.33 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Sales rose 2 percent to $4.27 billion, ahead of the analysts' forecast of $4.25 billion.

Organic sales, which strip out the impact of foreign exchange, acquisitions and divestitures, rose 8 percent. The volume of goods sold rose 5 percent, and pricing increased 3.5 percent.

Cross-Functional Team Building: Breaking Down Silos ? Team ...

Posted on by Anne Thornley-Brown, M.B.A. @executiveoasis

As organizations grow, it can be challenging to maintain the culture of innovation that fueled their success in the first palce. Teamwork is essential for fostering innovation. It?s like growing a garden. You have to pull out the weeds can stifle growth and out-of-the box thinking. It?s not a quick fix.

Every now and then, we receive requests from prospective clients for a 2 hour or half day team building session aimed at breaking down silos and promoting cross-functional teamwork. I always tell companies the same thing. ?It can?t be done. While some team building consultants will be glad to take your money and run, our clients deserve better.? A half day simulation can barely scratch the surface and kick off a process but it can?t resolve deep seated issues or conflicts.

What does effective cross functional team building look like?

  1. Begin by?identifying?the SPECIFIC business issues that have been created by the lack of teamwork.
  2. Pinpoint SPECIFIC incidents that have cost or lost the company money.?Attach a dollar value to each incident and identify its cause (e.g. bottlenecks, communication breakdowns,?rivalry?and infighting, withholding information and resources.)
  3. Next, set specific objectives. Really take the time to clarify what effective cross-functional teamwork will look like and how things will be ?different around here? when there is an improvement.
  4. Crowdsource your content. Give team members input through a participant profile or survey.
  5. Form the teams and ensure that they are truly cross-functional.
  6. Give each team a SPECIFIC business issue or assignment on which they will continue to work after the team building session. Appoint a management or executive sponsor for each business issue and ensure that they participate in the team building session with the cross-functional team that will address it.
  7. Place inexperienced team members in leadership roles and senior leaders in support roles.
  8. Pick a simulation that mirrors your organization?s realities.Examples:
  9. A week prior to the team building session, provide a briefing for your senior leadership team. One or two days ahead of time thoroughly brief the team leaders for the simulation so that they are clear about their roles.
  10. Facilitate a business simulation with all of the key ingredients for ensuring team building effectiveness.

A breakdown in cross-functional teamwork does not happen over night. Breaking down silos and busting bottlenecks will take time and patience but the results will be worth it.

Kenya H1 tea output down 11 pct, earnings to remain

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya's tea output fell 11.4 percent in the first half of the year due to extreme weather conditions, the tea board said on Wednesday, with full-year production projected to decline 5 percent compared to 2011.

The tea board said 2012 output was expected to fall to 360 million kg, down from 377 million kg recorded in 2011, mainly due to lower production in the first half of the year.

But with average tea prices increasing to around $3 per kg at auctions, up from $2.97 in the first half of 2011, the loss of earnings is expected to be minimal.

"We project that the level of earnings will stay the same as we had last year," Sicily Kariuki, managing director of the Tea Board of Kenya, told Reuters.

Tea exports from the east African country, the world's leading black tea exporter, fell to 207.77 million kg from 211.7 million kg in the six months to the end of June.

Overall tea output fell to 158.17 million kg for the first half of the year, down from 178.4 million kg recorded during the same period in 2011.

"We experienced drought at the beginning of the year and now we've seen some harsh conditions in terms of cold and very low temperatures in the tea growing areas," Kariuki said.

Brazil, Togo and Cameroon started importing Kenyan tea this year, the tea board said, while exports to emerging market countries like United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan, Djibouti and Indonesia also increased.

Egypt remains the biggest buyer for Kenyan tea, accounting for 21 percent of the east African country's tea exports in the first half of 2012.

Yelling Stop: You Are The Long-Term Test (Part 3): Heartburn Pills

Most medications and ingestible products, including foods, are tested for a short period of time in order to determine if they're grossly toxic. Foods, of course, are hardly tested at all: the chef merely has to say voila! and it's out the door; even novel foods. Long-term testing, of the sort that might reveal subtle problems that might occur over decades or generations, are not done at all because it's too expensive.

If we're lucky, there's someone keeping track of what happens to people who use the product, but most often no one does.

So whenever you try an ingestible product, be aware that you're part of the testing protocol. Whether you want to be or not.

Here's the latest example: "Heartburn pills and some very uncomfortable questions... They help millions - yet now doctors warn of long-term side effects":

"...To begin with, the pills had a wonderful effect.

"?Suddenly the pain was gone,? she recalls. ?I could eat all those foods I?d been avoiding, like pastries.?

"But then in 2006, after she?d been taking the pills for 20 years, her health began to decline.

"?I was getting so tired,? she says. ?At night in bed my feet would swell up like balloons. And my appetite had gone ? over a year or so I lost four stone.

"'My friends started saying I looked really drained. I had no idea what was wrong with me.?

"Her GP ran some tests and found that she had very low levels of magnesium..."

Turns out Proton-pump inhibitors, as heartburn pills are known, can block the body from absorbing magnesium, a crucial nutrient. Whoops...

But that's not all!

"...Just last week U.S. researchers found PPIs raise the risk of developing the superbug C. difficile by two thirds, and warned they should be used ?more prudently?...."
C. difficile is one of the most prevalent and nasty bugs you can get from a hospital stay... It's a major health issue.

And there's more!

"...Another fairly well known side-effect is an increased risk of bone fracture when PPIs are used for longer than a year.

"This could be because low magnesium levels can reduce the body?s ability to absorb calcium, needed for bone strength.

"Many people with osteoporosis are prescribed the bone-protecting drugs bisphosphonates, but these can cause heartburn, so PPIs are often also prescribed to stop it.

"Yet PPIs can cut the effectiveness of bisphosphonates to almost zero, according to a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine last year...."

That's priceless. The second pill that the doctor prescribes to counter the side-effects of the first pill makes the first pill useless. I wonder how many millions of people are taking both these pills, with all their other side effects, and getting no relief whatsoever from their orginal ill?
"...When PPIs first came out, the big hope was they?d cut rates of oesophageal cancer by reducing acid damage to the oesophagus from reflux.

"That hasn?t happened; in fact, rates of oesophageal cancer are rising faster than any other.

"Research published last year in the journal Archives of Surgery found that successfully controlling the symptoms of acid reflux with the drugs actually ?increased? the risk of cancer rather than reducing it.

"How could this be so?

"?Less acid means less pain from heartburn,? says Dr Steven DeMeester, a gastroesophageal expert at the University of Southern California. ?But there?s a suggestion it is not the acid that causes the problem to the cells in the gullet, but other chemicals in the stomach fluid that is leaking out. PPIs do nothing to stop the leaking.?..."

Oh well, so much for that. But at least they help gastric reflux, right?

Right?

"...And, worryingly, studies have suggested it is very hard to come off PPIs.

"The symptoms come back with a vengeance, and people once again reach for the pills.

"In 2009, Danish researchers gave PPIs or a placebo to 120 healthy volunteers and found nearly half of those on the drug developed symptoms of gastric reflux within just two months after they?d stopped taking the drugs, compared with 15 per cent on the placebo.

"It?s thought that once acid production is no longer suppressed, the body naturally ramps up acid production so heartburn symptoms come back stronger than ever."

Wow, symptoms come back worse with the drug... so in the long term you're better off with the placebo. Why do doctors continue to prescribe these horrors?
"...But many doctors feel under pressure to give their patients a speedy solution."
And as one doctor notes:
"Shaw Somers, a gastric specialist from St Richard?s Hospital in Chichester, advises: ?Taking PPIs as a short-term way of dealing with occasional bouts of heartburn flare-up works fine for most patients.

"'But if you need to take them all the time you are at much greater risk of damaging side-effects.

"?Of course, the drug companies will keep very quiet about this until they are formally required to look into it.?

Lovely. Caveat emptor.

So if you've got heartburn (formally known as GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease - GERD) what do you do?

"Those of us in the business of treating patients with low-carbohydrate diets have known for years that these diets successfully treat GERD virtually 100 percent of the time."
I have a good friend who came down with heartburn during his morning run. It was so bad he collapsed on the side of the road, thinking he was having a heart attack. After a great deal of needling from me and his new girlfriend, he decided to try a gluten-free (and therefore lower-carb) diet. He's completely cured, with no pills, and no nasty side-effects.

That's worth a shot, in my opinion.

Incidentally, the biggest consumers of antacid medications aren't people, they're cattle in feedlots. Cattle in feedlots are fed grain to fatten them up, or increase milk production.

"...Relatively high grain rations are fed today for various reasons. The modern dairy cow is genetically superior for its capability to maintain levels of high production and performance cost effectively by elevated nutrient density through increased grain proportions providing necessary energy. However, a consistent reliance upon finely chopped, fermented feeds, and increased grains, retards rumen fermentation by decreased pH."
The grains give them heartburn.

So I think it's pretty safe to say that grains cause heartburn, and if you'd like to cure your heartburn, you're best off avoiding them.

And no side-effects.

Clean Energy Stocks -News and Commentary in Cleantech ...

Annapolis, MD - July 23, 2012 (Investorideas.com renewable energy/green newswire) Clean Wind Energy Tower, Inc. (OTCBB:CWET)
announced the publishing of its patent titled Efficient Energy
Conversion Devices & Methods (U.S. Pat. No. 8,120,191) by the United
States Patent and Trademark Office.
The patent covers specific aspects of deploying multiple turbines in a wind tunnel coupled to a novel hydraulic system capable of maintaining high efficiency hydraulic to electric conversion under a wide variance of wind speeds. The ultimate goal is to maximize the capture and utilization of all available wind energy in any given wind tunnel, as well as providing a consistency of power output during any deviations in wind speed. The Company considers this patent to be a "Core Patent" providing a significant barrier to entry for any potential competitor.
Ronald W. Pickett, President, Chief Executive Officer of CWET previously stated, "Our innovative solution of extracting the maximum energy generated by the captured wind, with the least loss of power throughout the transmission cycle from capture to exhaust, produces a much more consistent level of power output while compensating for the normal differentials in atmospheric conditions over any given period, and should coincide with our customers' requirements. The technological concepts and applications claimed and embodied within this patent provide significant benefits toward enhancing the level of efficient power generation, as well as reducing operational costs.
The annual capacity factor for the downdraft portion of the Energy Tower is predicted at approximately 51%.??Prime production periods are daytime and evening during spring, summer and fall, which closely align with electricity demand patterns. However, the External Wind Capture keeps working 24/7, whenever a wind is blowing, including cold winter months and at night.??Its capacity factor is estimated at approximately 75%, which raises the Energy Tower's overall capacity factor to above 60%. Clean Wind believes that the Downdraft Tower will be capable of recapturing and recycling the vast majority of the water used to create the downdraft. This water may be returned to be reused in the Downdraft Tower or diverted for local potable water.
As currently designed, the Company anticipates that each Downdraft Tower will be capable of generating up to 1,200 megawatts per hour of salable electricity to the grid. One megawatt equates to 1,000,000 watts or 1,000 kilowatts of electricity. Currently, avoided costs per kilowatt in California are running approximately $0.11 per kilowatt hour.
About Clean Wind Energy, Inc.
Clean Wind Energy, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Clean Wind Energy Tower, Inc, has designed and is preparing to develop, and construct large "Downdraft Towers" that use benevolent, non-toxic natural elements to generate electricity and clean water economically by integrating and synthesizing numerous proven as well as emerging technologies.
Our Company's core objective and focus is to become a leading provider of clean efficient green energy to the world communities at a reasonable cost without the destructive residuals of fossil fuel, while continuing to generate innovative technological solutions for today and tomorrow's electrical power needs.
In addition to constructing Downdraft Towers in the United States and abroad, the Company intends to establish partnerships at home and abroad to propagate these systems and meet increasing global demand for clean water and electricity. Clean Wind has assembled a team of experienced business professionals, engineering and scientific consultants with access to the breakthrough energy research upon which this technology is founded and the proven ability to bring the idea to market.
Clean Wind has filed several patents that the Company believes will further enhance this potentially revolutionary technology. Clean Wind Energy, Inc. is based in Annapolis MD, and is traded on the OTCBB under the symbol ?CWET' . For more information, please visit www.cleanwindenergytower.com.

London 2012 Olympics: US President Barack Obama could fly to Games to watch basketball final

The US First Lady, Michelle Obama, who has a warm relationship with the Queen, will also be at Buckingham Palace and represent her husband at the Olympics although the White House has not confirmed if the Obama daughters, Malia and Sasha, will also attend the Games.

But President Obama has less pleasant Olympic memories, being humiliated when the IOC awarded just a handful of votes to Chicago's 2016 Olympic bid despite his last minute glad-handing of voting members in Copenhagen in 2008.

But with the presidential election four months away, Obama may not want Romney to be the only leader associated with the Games, especially if the US are strongly vying with the Chinese at the top of the Olympic medal tally.

One of the test scenarios put to the Olympic basketball venue manager over the past few months was determining who would be ejected from the VIP seating if Obama and his extensive security entourage turned up with just 30-minutes notice.

Earlier this week Obama and vice president Joe Biden witnessed the USA Olympic basketball team in their final exhibition game against Brazil before leaving for England.

"Obviously the talent that we have got at this point is unbelievable," said Obama in the half-time break of the match as LeBron James and Kobe Bryant dominated the court.

?So there?s no reason that we shouldn?t bring home the gold. We just have to stay focused.?

Romney will also attend two UK fund-raisers to help his election campaign, now organised by a host of global banking leaders after former Barclays chief executive Bob Diamond resigned in the wake of the Libor rate scandal.

Lanhee Chen, Romney's policy director, explained the overseas trip was to "listen and learn, to visit countries that share common values, common interests and in many cases share heritage with people in the United States".
